Create a new drawing in free online CAD

This free CAD tool supports new drawings and 2D editing as well as viewing. Run it in a browser on Windows or macOS and save edited files to your device.

  1. Choose New drawing on the OpenCAD start screen. To edit a drawing you received, choose Open file and select the DWG or DXF file.
  2. Draw lines with LINE and circles with CIRCLE. Check the drawing units used for lengths and coordinates first. Press Esc to end a command.
  3. Organize layers and dimensions and edit the required geometry. When editing an existing drawing, save under a different name to preserve the original.
  4. Save as DWG or DXF to download an editable drawing. For a document to review, use PLOT to export a PDF.

Opening DWG on a Mac or viewing drawings without AutoCAD

OpenCAD opens DWG and DXF drawings in a current browser without installing CAD software or signing up. On Windows or macOS, first try the sample in a browser supporting JavaScript and WebGL2. Memory use and processing time depend on file size and complexity.

Autodesk DWG TrueView runs on Windows. When using a browser viewer on a Mac, first check whether you only need to view or also to edit or convert, and whether files are uploaded to a server.

First, verify the file format and supported version.

DWG is a format for storing CAD drawings, and DXF is a format used when exchanging drawing data with other programs. They cannot be converted to each other just by changing the extension.

OpenCAD reads ASCII and binary files from DWG R13~R2018 and DXF R12~R2018. Even in supported versions, some objects, external references or fonts may appear different from the original program.

Steps for opening a file and adjusting the view

Please use a browser that supports JavaScript and WebGL2, such as the latest version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.

  1. Click “Open free DWG/DXF CAD” below. If you have no file, explore “Open sample drawing” on the start screen first.
  2. Select a .dwg or .dxf file via "Open File," or simply drag and drop a file into the viewer window.
  3. Once the drawing is open, use the mouse wheel to zoom in or out, and hold down the middle button to pan. Start by using the "fit to view" (or "view all") option to locate the drawing.
  4. Switch between the Model and Layout tabs, and check the on/frozen status of layers. When you select an object, you can view relevant properties such as length and area.

Check for blank screens, missing text, and external references

If parts of a drawing are not visible, check the "view all" setting and the status of the layers. If the original drawing references external files—such as other DWG/DXF files, images, or PDFs—those files are also required. You can link them by selecting the appropriate folders or files in the External References (XR) window.

If SHX fonts cause characters to look different, you can use SHXFONTS to select a font folder on this computer. The display of the Korean replacement font and the original SHX font may not be exactly the same.

If it still fails to open, please report it as a GitHub issue, including the file extension, the version in which it was saved, and the error message. Do not attach client drawings or confidential files to public issues; instead, provide a minimal, shareable example that reproduces the problem.

File processing and scope of use

The reading, display, and saving of selected drawings are handled entirely within the browser on this computer; drawing files are never uploaded to the server. Static assets, such as the application itself and fonts used for display, are downloaded from the web.

OpenCAD is a personal open source project released under the MIT license. Check drawings used for deliveries or processing again against the original program and work standards.
